Yoga practice helps you build strength, increase flexibility, and develop greater mental focus. This guide gives you the basic information to get started. Remember, the hardest part is walking through the studio’s front door! Try different classes and talk with your teachers (they like questions). Over time, you can tailor an individualized practice that emphasizes exactly what you need.
First VisitPlease arrive 15 minutes early. Note that early morning and Sunday classes require use of the call box for us to open the main door (just follow the directions on the call box). We have some simple paperwork to complete and you can speak with the instructor about any special needs you may have.
Before ClassClothes: Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that is not too loose. It should allow a full range of movement including twisting and bending. Our studio has changing rooms and cubbies to store your belongings.
Bring: Your yoga mat, towel, and water. We have free mats to use and all other yoga props for your convenience.
Avoid: Strong perfume, essentials oils, cologne, and other scents. Respect the space and your fellow practitioners by keeping you mat and body clean and odor-free.
Eating & Drinking: Don’t eat for an hour before your class. A little water is okay, but too much liquid can be uncomfortable.
Once You ArriveFootwear: Yoga is practiced in bare feet for traction and safety. Shoes are not allowed on the practice floor.
Electronic devices: Please turn off your cell phone. If you are on call, please have your phone on vibrate.
Communicate: Let your instructor know if you have any injuries, limitations, or concerns so they can work with you.
Other people’s mats: Please do not step on other people’s mats – for some it is their sacred space.
During ClassChild’s pose: Take child’s pose when you need a rest. You can take this pose at any time, even if the teacher does not cue it.
If you are late: Being on time is great, but sometimes life happens. If you are late, enter the space quietly and join the class trying to minimize disruption. Take a few warm-up postures and enter the teacher’s sequence.
Savasana: This is the last post of class where we lay down and close our eyes. This is an important pose so please do not leave until class is finished. Your teacher will let you know when to come out of the pose.
After ClassClean: If you borrowed a mat from the studio, use the cleaning spray and a towel to wipe it down. Wipe up any moisture from the floor. If you used props, neatly return them.
Take your belongings: Don’t forget your mat, water bottle, and clothes!
What Type of Class Should I Take?The first place to start is class descriptions. Read these to find classes that appeal to you. Then look at class schedules to see when the classes are available. Each class has a link to the teacher. You can read the teacher’s bio to understand their training and style.

On the MatYoga practice typically involves a series of physical postures that are coordinated with full breathing and a mental focus on the present moment. It is a lifelong practice of progressive change and there’s no need to do it all on the first try. There are many modifications available for the physical poses to make them more or less challenging depending on your needs.
Remember it is not a competition with others or yourself. Challenge yourself but don’t push too hard – yoga should never be painful. If you can’t breathe, it’s a warning to back off a little and reduce the intensity of the pose.
In the beginning you may want to practice in the back row so you can observe other students – they’ll help you get a feel for the different poses and class flow.
